Addicted to DS

I bought my Nintendo DS a year ago and I thought an impulsive buyer like me would have been bored with it by this time. I’m surprised I’m still  enjoying it as games get better and better. I was about to buy PSP back then but pulled out the DS in the end after seeing the available games out there. Don’t get me wrong, I love Tekken and God of War, but that just about it. DS, on the other hand, has a horde of games that really suit my taste and style.

My officemate recently introduced me to Time Hollow. This was released last year and I don’t know why a great game like this just passed me by. The game is like a visual novel about Ethan Kairos who has a Hollow Pen that can pierce a whole in time and change the past. The point and click gameplay was a delight for a lazy player like me. The storyline, which reminds me of the movie “The Butterfly Effect” is very entertaining and engaging. There’s an overall anime feel to this game, from the character art, manga-like panels, to the anime cutscenes. The opening anime scene was nothing special but it was fun to watch.

Dragon Ball Origins is also one of the recent games that made its mark in the industry. The game follows the story of young Goku and Bulma in their quest for the dragon balls. It likewise features all the other adorable characters in the anime – Oolong, Chi chi, Yamcha, and my idol Master Roshi. The gameplay is simple and gets monotonous in time. What makes this game click, though, is how it almost accurately relives the wonderful moments of the classic anime and any fan would definitely appreciate it. Go Flying Nimbus!

As for homebrews, VNDS is so far the best app out there. The guys at digital-haze are just brilliant and I thank them for letting me play the ported Tsukihime and Fate Stay Night VNs on my DS. I’ll give Saya no Uta a shot pretty soon.

These games have pretty much occupied my playing time and some more exciting ones will be coming this year. I’m particularly looking forward to the English version of Lux Pain. The game features  ”Atsuki, who by wielding the power of Lux-Pain tries to unravel the mystery of the ‘Silent’; a worm that has infected humans and forced them to commit horrible crimes” (1up.com).  How cool is that? I hope someone could also translate the Higurashi DS series; that would really rock.

  1. I sit next to a guy playing on his DS. The train is crowded, and we’re the only two within sight who have seats.
    Hey, he seems to be playing a visual novel.
    I sneak a peek.
    I see Shirou banging Saber doggy style.
    I get up and head straight for the door, hoping that the next stop will come soon enough.

  2. I won’t dare play FSN in public places ^^

  3. I so want one, but I still can’t decide if I should buy one because Wii sounds good too…^^;

  4. Ritchan: Oh he modded it to play visual novels? Not something I would play out in public but nice idea.

    Shinji: For me the DS was somewhat of a buy that I regret. I have a DS and a DS lite and games, but I rarely play on it. Don´t know why but I just can´t get myself to play with it :(

    Even though games like Chrono Trigger and FFTA2 are available.

    Hazy: You want my tip? Take a look at the games library, if you find enough games that interest you that exist and are comming, then by all means buy a DS.

  5. Hazy, manga’s right, try to browse thru the DS gamelist first, you might find something that you really like there. Though Wii looks sweet too ^^

    Manga, yup Chrono Trigger is also on my list, I hope you’d be able to find time to play your DS, it’s a very fun and versatile console ^^

  6. I know. But I´m having to much games to play as it already is.

    Star Ocean: First Departure/2nd Evolution, Ar Tonelico 2, Eternal Poison, Wild Arms 5, Disgaea 3, Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Lions War.

    To name a few :p

    Should I add even more games that will just be left lying around for a long time? I don´t really think so. But who knows? I might buy CT DS soon, even though I´ve already played it on emulator and on PS…

  7. Manga & shinji: Thanks for the tip! Yeah, there are a bunch of DS games that I like. Most are in Japanese though, haha. I wonder if I’d enjoy it as much if I don’t understand what’s written. ^^;

    Too bad there isn’t a Gran Turismo game for Nintendo. Any interesting racing games for DS?

  8. Manga, wow! awesome games you have there. I haven’t even touched my WA5. It’s the same for me, so many games, so little time hehe ^^

    Hazy, yup most of the cool DS games are in Japanese. Too bad I can’t read nor understand them. I’m actually playing this DS tutorial game called My Japanese Coach in an attempt to learn jap ^^. I’m not really a fan of racing games but I’ve played Mario Kart. It might look silly compared to GT though ^^

  9. AS

    Ya, when I get my new DS game I’m really addicted to it lol. I like the fact that it’s non-regional so I can play Japanese games as well xD.

  10. I’m still stuck with Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow and Etrian Odyssey. I’ve no time to play that much T_T

  11. AS, I really need to learn the language so I can finally play those cool jap games.

    Coeli, I played thru Etrian Odyssey 2, the gunner in winter clothes is soooo cute!^^

  12. There’s an Etrian Odyssey 2?

    Lol I haven’t even finished the first one yet! But I’m going to look for the second one so I can start as soon as I finish XD
